Times are tough, and for some people,
ATM's are just too tempting, with all that money just sitting in a
box. ATM thefts are up nationwide.
Thieves who hotwired a forklift
and used it to steal an ATM in California were busted when
sheriff's deputies tracked the machine via GPS. Officials found
the ATM about four hours after it was stolen. The thieves
allegedly tried using a pry bar, welder's torch and sledgehammer
to open the ATM but weren't able to crack it. The stolen ATM was
retrieved - with "a large amount of cash still inside," one
press report claimed. Thanks to the ATM's GPS tracking device,
police in Sacramento quickly located and arrested the would-be
thieves, who also raided an ATM in July at the Cal Expo
exhibition grounds.
A thief in Georgia used a forklift to steal an
ATM, and when bank officials
informed the police that the GPS tracking device was turned on,
and working, the tracking device led them to a pick-up truck
driving down I-85. The pick-up wouldn't pull over, and
eventually took one corner too quickly, resulting in the heavy
ATM shifting in the bed of the truck, and the truck turning
over. The driver was not hurt and was taken into custody.
In Miami, Fla.
thieves rammed a bulldozer stolen from a nearby construction
site through the bank's concrete barriers to get at the ATM.
In a Wisconsin
warehouse, a thief used a forklift to load a stolen ATM into the
back of a station wagon. He was later caught and the ATM was
still in the back, covered with a blanket.
